Stolen ODOT Equipment Returned After Being Found in Kansas
There’s no place like home: Stolen ODOT equipment returns from Kansas
Help from the public has led to the recovery of a stolen piece of Oklahoma Department of Transportation maintenance equipment 300 miles away in Kansas. An anonymous tip called in to ODOT on Nov. 3 led to the discovery of the stolen Caterpillar backhoe in Alta Vista, southwest of Topeka, by local law enforcement later that day. The equipment has been returned to the ODOT Division Three headquarters in Ada.
The backhoe had been missing since it was stolen from a highway work site west of Tecumseh in Pottawatomie County on July 28. Because of its adventures in Kansas, the backhoe has been given the nickname “Dorothy.”
Now that the equipment has been returned, law enforcement agencies will continue investigating the theft. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office in Shawnee and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office in Council Grove, Kansas are both conducting investigations; however, no arrests have yet been made.
“ODOT is certainly pleased to see this piece of equipment recovered and put back into service on our highways,” Division Three Engineer Kevin Bloss said. “We want to thank the public for their assistance in locating the backhoe and the sheriff’s offices in Pottawatomie and McClain counties here in Oklahoma and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office in Kansas for their hard work.”
