Most of us have heard of acupuncture but may dismiss its benefits since it doesn’t fall under the usual list of Western medical treatments performed by “professionally trained doctors.” “Exactly what type of training does the needle-wielding practitioner have?” some may ask.
But Dr. Hongmei Ma at Oriental Medical Arts in Owasso offers the best of both worlds for those interested in alternative treatments yet looking for Western credentials or training.
Trained in China for 12 years in both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, she first worked in a traditional Chinese medicine hospital for several years before moving on to plastic surgery. From 1999 to 2013, she owned her own plastic surgery practice in Shenzhen, China, but still treated some of her cosmetic surgery patients with acupuncture for health problems they were experiencing. This past year, right here in Owasso, Dr. Ma returned to the field she loves most and feels she can most help people with — traditional Chinese medicine.
While she does not prescribe Western treatments or medications, Dr. Ma’s extensive medical training and experience often helps her to determine a medical problem that should be treated by a traditional M.D. and will always recommend that to a patient before proceeding on to a traditional Chinese medicine treatment.
In addition to acupuncture, she performs acupressure, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, cupping and smokeless moxibustion. Curious to learn more about acupuncture?

She explains: “Traditional Chinese medicine treats the body as a whole with the focus of the treatments to get the patient’s body back in balance, which ultimately cures many ills. With regard to acupuncture, needles are placed in various meridian points throughout the body depending on the problem being treated. The puncture causes a reaction locally and in the brain to activate the nervous, cardiovascular, hormone, and immune systems to begin the healing process and ultimately to bring the body back in balance.”
The benefit of these alternative treatments is they are natural with no side effects.
Dr. Ma came to the area two years ago when she and her husband David Post decided to leave behind their high-stress lives in China and start anew in Owasso where David has roots. Now she is pleased to offer Owasso area residents these centuries old, proven treatments.
“The people here are very friendly and open,” she says. “My patients are always so appreciative when I can help them, and it makes me feel great about the work I do. Also, many people here don’t have any experience with traditional Chinese medicine, and I love introducing to them an alternative approach to healing that they can benefit from.”
