TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —Applications for the 2016-17 Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition are now available.
The deadline to apply is July 8. The Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition is held Saturday, Aug. 27.
“The Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition is an excellent opportunity for young Cherokee women to showcase their Cherokee knowledge and talent,” said Lisa Trice-Turtle, Miss Cherokee sponsor and the 1986-87 Miss Cherokee. “For me, being Miss Cherokee was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an absolute honor to represent the Cherokee Nation throughout the 14-county jurisdiction and at large. Sharing stories of our rich culture and history while making new friends was an unforgettable experience.”
Miss Cherokee contestants must be between the ages of 17- 22 as of Aug. 27. Candidates cannot have previously served as Miss Cherokee and must be a Cherokee Nation citizen living in the 14-county tribal jurisdiction.
In the past year, Miss Cherokee has attended the White House, Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Oklahoma Capitol, Cherokee Nation events, community meetings and schools.

Applications for Junior Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition and Little Cherokee Ambassador Competition are also now available. The deadline is July 20.
To run for Junior Miss Cherokee, contestants must be between the ages of 13-18, a Cherokee Nation citizen and reside within the 14-county tribal jurisdiction.
For the Little Cherokee Ambassador Competition, one girl and one boy are selected from each of three age groups: 4-6 years, 7-9 years and 10-12 years. Candidates must be a Cherokee Nation citizen and live within the 14-county tribal jurisdiction.

Applications are also available at the Cherokee First desk at the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex in Tahlequah. Miss Cherokee applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, July 8. Hand-carried or faxed applications will not be accepted.
