TULSA, Okla. – Singer-songwriter and folk rock icon Don McLean is bringing “American Pie” and a number of his famous hits to The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa July 3.

After years of playing multiple venues with the likes of Arlo Guthrie, Steppenwolf, Pete Seeger and Janis Ian, McLean’s first album, “Tapestry,” was released in 1969 and attracted good reviews and commercial success. But the young troubadour quickly found international stardom with the release of the iconic song “American Pie” in November 1971. Every line of the song was analyzed repeatedly to find the real meaning, but McLean refused to sanction any of the many interpretations. Thirty years later, it was voted No. 5 in a poll of the 365 “Songs of the Century” compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Thanks to the second single, “Vincent,” the “American Pie” album remained at No. 1 on the UK charts for seven weeks. In the wake of his album’s success, McLean became a major concert attraction as he performed his original material as well as classics from singers such as Buddy Holly and Frank Sinatra. In 1972, McLean reissued “Tapestry” and turned songs like “And I Love You So” and “Castles in the Air” into famous hits.
McLean went on to release a number of albums throughout his career, giving life to songs like “The Pride Parade,” “Mountains of Mourne,” “Chain Lightning,” “Since I Don’t Have You,” “Love in My Heart,” “Crying” and “Can’t Blame the Wreck on the Train.”
In 2001, McLean was granted an honorary doctorate from Iona College, and “American Pie” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in February 2002. Two years later, McLean was inaugurated into the National Academy of Popular Music Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. He also received the BBC Folk Music Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
McLean continues to tour the world with his classic catalogue as he writes and releases new material.
