TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor Joe Byrd has been elected by his peers to the post of speaker of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council, with Victoria Vazquez being elected deputy speaker and Frankie Hargis elected as secretary during the legislative body’s Rules Committee meeting Monday.
Eight of the 17 tribal councilors took the oath of office on Friday for four-year terms. Two were reelected to their posts, and six are newly elected.
“With the new individuals coming on board, this Tribal Council is in position to continue the progress the Cherokee Nation has made in recent years,” said Byrd, the first speaker of the Tribal Council to be fluent in Cherokee since the post was established under the 1999 Cherokee Nation Constitution. “I am truly anxious to see what our legislative body can accomplish when we work with the mindset of what is best for the Cherokee Nation.”
The Tribal Council also selected new committee chairs and advisory representatives, which are as follows:
  • Byrd remains chair of the Rules Committee. Hargis is the new co-chair.
  • Janees Taylor was elected to chair of the Executive and Finance Committee. Newly elected Keith Austin is co-chair.
  • Dick Lay remains chair of the Community Service Committee. Harley Buzzard retains the co-chair position.
  • David Walkingstick remains the chair of the Education and Culture Committee. Don Garvin retains the co-chair position.
  • Hargis will serve as the new chair of the Health Committee. Newly elected Bryan Warner will serve as co-chair.
  • Curtis Snell retains the chair position of the Resources Committee. Newly elected Rex Jordan will serve as the new co-chair.
  • Vazquez, Jordan, Austin and newly elected Wanda Hatfield join Tribal Councilors Byrd, Hargis, Snell and David Thornton as advisory board members on the Cherokee Nation Businesses board.
  • Tribal Councilor Shawn Crittenden joins Tribal Councilor Hargis as an advisory board member on the Cherokee Nation Waste Management board.
  • Tribal Councilors Jordan and Warner join Tribal Councilors Hargis, Taylor and Snell as advisory board members on the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation board.
