Cherokee Nation Marshals Reward Students with Computers
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Cherokee Nation marshals wheeled in new desktop computers and surprised five high school students at their schools with new technology to have for college.
Sequoyah High School freshman Ethan Winn, South Coffeyville High School senior Ariel Yeoman, Caney Valley High School senior Gage Lankford, Chelsea High School senior Jacey Phillips and Okay High School senior Anna Ruckman each received a new computer this month as part of the Marshal Service “North Pole Project.”
The Cherokee Nation Marshal Service receives five computers to present to five deserving students identified by their school leaders each year through the program originally started by the Broken Arrow Police Department. Several Tulsa-metro law enforcement agencies, as well as Cherokee Nation Marshal Service and Osage Nation, now participate.
“I did have to share a laptop with my younger sister,” said Ruckman, 17, of Okay, who received the computer to help her get certified in respiratory therapy at Indian Capital Technology Center-Tulsa after she graduates. “Having a computer of my own will help me get started with my career, so I’m thankful for the Cherokee Nation’s help.”
Ruckman works full time at a Fort Gibson nursing home and plays on the school’s volleyball team, all while attending vocational training classes and making good grades in school.
