College housing assistance applications open July 25

Cherokee Nation logoTAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation is accepting applications for fall college housing assistance starting July 25.

The application can be downloaded at http://www.hacn.org/.  Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Aug. 5 at any Cherokee Nation Housing Authority office or by mail.

“Anytime the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation can help ease the financial burden of pursuing a college degree for a Cherokee student, I believe that’s an opportunity we should embrace,” said Gary Cooper, executive director of the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation. “Attending college presents students with enough worries. A nice, affordable place to live should not be another concern for them.”

To qualify, the student’s permanent address must be inside the Cherokee Nation’s tribal jurisdiction, but that student may attend college anywhere in the United States.

The College Housing Assistance Program provides up to $1,000 per semester to low income, Native American students. The program helps 125 students with safe and affordable housing while attending college and is funded through the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA).
