August 28 General Obligation Bond election information

Broken Arrow has a long history of considering General Obligation bonds to support public improvements. A great deal of work has gone into preparing this upcoming bond package for Broken Arrow citizens. We are excited to see our City grow and develop, and we want to continue to make the public improvements necessary to see our community thrive for the next decade and beyond.

At a special meeting on June 6, the City Council approved a Special Election Proclamation and Notice calling for a vote of Broken Arrow residents to decide on six propositions. The complete package totals approximately $210 million:

  • Proposition 1: Transportation
    • $142.625 million
  • Proposition 2: Public Safety
    • $20.35 million
  • Proposition 3: Parks and Recreation
    • $17.75 million
  • Proposition 4: Public Facilities
    • $16.8 million
  • Proposition 5: Stormwater
    • $7.5 million
  • Proposition 6: Drainage**
    • $5.5 million

**Must pass with 60% approval or higher as some proposed drainage projects could potentially require work to be completed on private property. State law restricts the use of public funding on private property, unless voters authorize such spending.

The final project list was submitted to the City Council during a special meeting held May 8, after a long process that included a survey of the public in the fall of 2017, three preliminary public input meetings in late February 2018 and a final public input meeting on April 23.

A total of 88 projects appear on the final list, including:

  • Widen Houston (81st) Street from Garnett Road to Aspen (145th) Avenue
  • Widen 23rd Street (County Line) between Omaha (51st) to Albany (61st) Streets
  • Improve intersections on 9th Street (Lynn Lane) near Highway 51
  • Improve drainage in neighborhoods
  • Construct Fire Station No. 7
  • Construct meeting center for veterans
  • Construct Senior Citizen Center annex facility
  • Various Parks improvements throughout the City

If approved, the Broken Arrow GO Bond means that citizens will benefit from these new projects such as streets, public safety, and parks — with no tax increase.

Broken Arrow is fortunate to remain on a growth trajectory in both population and businesses. As the City continues to grow in families and employers, it is critical to aggressively pursue long-term projects to ensure the City’s infrastructure is able to meet the needs of both.

The election is scheduled for August 28, 2018.
