Oklahoma legend to play The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. – Music legend Leon Russell is one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. On Aug. 6 he is set to perform his classics at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.
Tickets start at $35 and go on sale June 11.
In his distinguished and unique 50-year career, he has played, arranged, written and produced some of the best records in popular music.
Born in southwest Oklahoma in 1942, Russell was playing in Tulsa nightclubs at the age of 14. After graduating from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Russell’s band, The Starlighters, went on the road with Jerry Lee Lewis. Russell left Tulsa at the age of 17 for Los Angeles, where he began playing in the L.A. clubs and eventually became one of the best session musicians in Hollywood.
As a musician, arranger, producer, singer, songwriter, pianist, guitarist, record company owner, bandleader and touring musician, he has collaborated with hundreds of artists, including Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, B.B. King, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Dean Martin, Marvin Gaye and The Beach Boys.
Russell’s first solo album, “Leon Russell,” includes the classic hits “A Song For You,” “Hummingbird” and “Delta Lady.” The album featured fellow musicians George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton and Klaus Voorman.
His best-selling album, “Carney,” was released in 1972. The album includes the single “Tight Rope,” which reached No.11 on the pop music charts.
Russell’s album “Will O’ The Wisp” features the hit single “Lady Blue,” which reached the No. 14 spot on the charts. “The Best Of Leon” was released in 1976 and earned Russell his sixth gold record.
Leon teamed with Willie Nelson in 1979 for the country album “One For The Road,” which earned a gold record and received a Country Music Association nomination for “Album of the Year.” The album includes the Grammy Award-winning song “Heartbreak Hotel.”
In 2010, Russell released “The Union,” a duet album with Sir Elton John. The album single “If It Wasn’t For Bad” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
Throughout his career, Russell has received numerous awards and recognition for his achievements, including “A Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2006, induction into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011.
