Kaylin Coody is changing the way students think about life after high school by allowing them to see their options first-hand.
“The business people are saying we don’t have a workforce, and my kids are saying we don’t know what we’re going to do. It felt to me like there was a gap there,” said Supt. Coody.
In an effort to close that gap, Coody developed an internship program for Hilldale seniors.
“I was skeptical of the situation, not really knowing what it was going to be like,” said Hilldale senior Levi West. “But after a few days, I automatically started loving it.”
But this is no one-size-fits-all program, according to Coody.
“It’s going to be different in every school because the businesses that are available are different in each community,” she said. “The main thing is matching up the students’ interests with the places you can get them. That is the most critical.”
For some students, the internship program has reaffirmed their career choice; for others, it has opened their eyes to new opportunities. The program has also been an eye-opener for local businesses.
“We’re pretty blown away,” said Aaron Kassaw, data systems administrator at Advantage Controls in Muskogee. “The program is great! The students have been attentive, shown up on time, learned from us and contributed to our team. We’re happy with it and ready to have more students.”
