Annual beer tasting benefits Tulsa Press Club, helps fund college scholarships
TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa’s premier beer-tasting event returns this fall to ONEOK Field, home of the Tulsa Drillers and anchor to the revitalized Brady and Greenwood districts. The Tulsa Press Club’s annual First Draft craft beer tasting is celebrating its 12th year on Friday evening, Oct. 14.
“There are a lot more brewers in Oklahoma than there were just last year. First Draft is a great way for people to meet brewers and try the new beers,” said Tom Gilbert, First Draft event chair. “Oklahoma is experiencing a craft beer revolution, and First Draft is an excellent way to come together and celebrate that revolution. We work to include as many new beers at the event as possible so attendees can talk with brewers, learn about each of the beers and enjoy themselves while doing so.”
Last year, First Draft featured more than 50 Oklahoma craft beers and included Marshall Brewing Co., Dead Armadillo and Prairie Artisan Ales as supporting brewers.
The beer selection will be even larger this year by including out-of-state beers and new brewers such as Tulsa’s own American Solera and Colorado-based brewer Kannah Creek Brewing Company. The TPC beer-tasting event will be Kannah Creek’s first event in Oklahoma.
Tom Gilbert, chief photographer for the Tulsa World and “What the Ale” beer blogger, is serving as chair of the event for his fifth straight year.
Sellout crowds on ONEOK’s Refinery Deck during previous years have opened up the opportunity to take First Draft to the concourse level of the ballpark. The concourse accommodates more people and overhead cover, allowing for more brewers, and gives beer-tasters extra room to move. Last year’s event sold out with roughly 600 guests attending. Gilbert expects that number to rise even higher this year.
First Draft benefits the Tulsa Press Club, whose mission is to foster and promote ethical journalism, defend freedom of the press and the public’s right to information, and encourage the exchange of ideas between media and their publics.
