The Cherokee Immersion Charter School serves more than 100 students from preschool to eighth grade in Tahlequah. Its charter under the Oklahoma Charter Schools Act was set to expire June 30.
“This ensures our youth who are immersed in our Cherokee language each day are not only learning the culture to pass on to future generations, but learning it based on a curriculum that is state certified,” Tribal Council Speaker Joe Byrd said. “Research shows that bilingual learners often think more critically and are analytical, but this charter also ensures students learn the same grade- level standards as their counterparts across the state.”
The Tribal Council voted to renew the charter for another five years.
In other business, the Tribal Council appointed Evan M. McLemore, of Bixby, as a member of the Cherokee Nation Administration Appeals Board. McLemore has a law degree from the University of Tulsa and served as an associate attorney at Levison, Smith and Huffman since April 2013.
The three-member board rules on employee appeals cases and serves four-year terms.
The Tribal Council also voted to increase the fiscal year operating budget by $11.4 million from grants and carryover funds. The tribe’s general fund is now $676.6 million.
The next Tribal Council meeting is 6 p.m., Monday, July 11, in the Tribal Council chambers of the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex in Tahlequah.
