TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Heritage Center is now accepting artwork for the 22nd annual Homecoming Art Show. Online submissions must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Aug. 9 to be considered for the show.
The Cherokee National Historical Society will host an awards reception on Aug. 25 from 6-8 p.m. to announce this year’s winners, who will receive a share of more than $10,000 in prize money sponsored by Cherokee Nation Businesses.
Oklahoma’s premier Cherokee art show, which opens to the public on Aug. 26 and runs through Sept. 30, features a variety of authentic Cherokee art divided into two divisions: traditional and contemporary.
The traditional division is defined as arts originating before European contact and consists of three categories: basketry, pottery and traditional arts.
The contemporary division is defined as arts arising among the Cherokee after European contact and consists of seven categories: paintings, sculpture, pottery, basketry, beadwork, jewelry and textiles.
Those looking to submit artwork must be a citizen of one of the three federally recognized Cherokee governments and enter before the Aug. 9 deadline. A copy of the artist’s citizenship card must accompany the entry.
A $10 submission fee is charged per entry to help support art show expenses. Cherokee National Treasures, Tradition Keepers of the United Keetoowah Band, Qualla co-op artists from the Eastern Band of Cherokee, and current CNHS members are exempt from the entry fee.
A photograph of the completed work, entry form and fee must be submitted at the same time or the entry will be disqualified. All entries must be submitted to callie-chunestudy@cherokee.org by 5 p.m. CST.
