DPS Commissioner Names Assistant Commissioner

DPS Commissioner John Scully has named Major Patrick Mays to the position of DPS Assistant Commissioner/Chief of Administration. In this role, Mays heads up the civilian and support side of DPS.
Mays has approximately 35 years of law enforcement experience, working for several different police departments before joining the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Academy class 49, in 1997. Chief Mays has served in multiple capacities within OHP and has been a supervisor since 2004, working his way through the ranks to Major. His most recent assignment was the Zone Commander for Zone 7, which includes the Turnpike Division, Mobile Command Post Operations and the State Traffic Homicide Unit.
Mays has an Associate Degree in Police Science from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Emergency Responder Administration from Oklahoma State University. He is also a graduate of the 256th Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy, graduating in 2014. He served in the United States Navy Reserve for 20 years.
“Mays’ experience, character and drive are the main contributors to his appointment as the Chief of Administration for the Department of Public Safety. Understanding the civilian and support side of DPS is critically important at a time we are working on multiple deadlines such as REAL ID. Mays will certainly be a driver as we modernize DPS and do our part to deliver to Governor Stitt and our citizens a top 10 state,” said Commissioner Scully.
Brent Sugg, Chief of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says “Chief Mays brings a diverse public service background to the position of Chief of Administration. Mays’ service in the United States Navy, the Highway Patrol and as a local police officer have given him the tools necessary to be an effective leader in this position.”
