While many of us were enjoying a lazy Saturday sleeping in, going fishing or playing golf, 23 dedicated City employees from the Utilities, Parks and Recreation, and Streets and Stormwater Departments were at work by 7 a.m. and picking up litter along Broken Arrow’s streets.
The effort had a two-fold purpose, 1. To keep Broken Arrow beautiful and 2. To avoid shredding trash along the roadways during the mowing season.
In eight hours, the teams picked up more than 150 bags of trash.
“Today, we are out here picking up trash and litter,” said Streets and Stormwater Director Rocky Henkel. “It’s not only important for us to keep Broken Arrow beautiful, but we also want to provide a clean image for all of our visitors and tourists that may be traveling through.”
Some of the teams picked up litter on County Line Road from 71st Street and worked their way south. Others went to Lynn Lane at 81st and went south and Tuscan between Aspen and Olive Streets. Other teams covered Aspen Street from Kenosha to the north and 61st Street going west from County Line Road to Lynn Lane Avenue.
We appreciate the hard work and dedication of these individuals who are willing to go a mile or more to Keep Broken Arrow beautiful. And as Bill Nye, the Science Guy, says, “To leave the world better than you found it, sometimes you have to pick up other people’s trash.”
