Cherokee Nation calendar of events for December

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Cherokee Nation hosts several events in the month of December, including the tribe’s annual Christmas Open House and a kanuchi demonstration.

The Cherokee Nation Christmas Open House will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cherokee Nation W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex in Tahlequah. Come visit Santa and Mrs. Claus and enjoy food and fun with the employees at Cherokee Nation.

Financial Readiness Empowerment Class: Taking a stronger control over personal finances. Class is from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 12-1 p.m. at the Osiyo Training Room, 17676 S. Muskogee Ave., Tahlequah, behind the Cherokee Nation Gift Shop. Free to attend. Contact Susan Sharp at susan-sharp@cherokee.org for more information.

Genealogy classes will be held at the Cherokee Heritage Center. Taught by experienced genealogists, these classes teach attendees the process of researching their Cherokee ancestry. Classes begin at 11 a.m. at 21192 S. Keeler Drive in Park Hill. Pre-registration is required by calling 888-999-6007.

A Cherokee Christmas holiday event will be from 1–6 p.m. at the Cherokee Heritage Center at 21192 S. Keeler Drive in Park Hill. Event is free, but “make and take” crafts are $10. Contact Amy Carey at amy-carey@cherokee.org for more information.

The First Cherokee Christmas Exhibit will be on display at the Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum in Tahlequah. The exhibit features natural decorations and Moravian displays that were common in 1805, the year of the first Christmas celebration. For more information go to VisitCherokeeNation.com.

Cherokee Nation Registration will be accepting new applications, assisting applicants with missing documents, and answering general questions from applicants at 10837 E. Marshall St. in Tulsa from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Staff will break for lunch from 12-1 p.m. For information, call 918-574-2749.

Christmas on the Square will be held at the Cherokee National History Museum in Tahlequah from 4–6 p.m. This is a special holiday event with a variety of festive activities available. Cherokee Nation’s W.W. Keeler Complex, satellite offices and health centers will be closed in observance of the Christmas holiday. Cherokee Nation W.W. Hastings Hospital urgent care and emergency department as well as other Cherokee Nation emergency services will remain open.
