VINITA, Okla. – Enjoy a day of traditional Cherokee art, music and more during the Fourth Annual Cherokee Day at Eastern Trails Museum on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Cherokee Day begins at 10 a.m. with opening remarks by Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. and Deputy Speaker of the Tribal Council Victoria Vazquez.
“This is an important celebration for Cherokee citizens, one where we honor our culture and the people who have strived to keep this great nation alive,” said Chief Hoskin, a Vinita resident. “We are grateful to the Eastern Trails Museum for partnering with us once again to celebrate Cherokee culture and educate visitors about the rich history of the Cherokee people.”
The family-friendly event runs until 1 p.m. and features live music and cultural demonstrations from Cherokee National Treasures.
Cultural demonstrations include wood and clay sculptures, finger weaving, turtle shell shaking, traditional weaponry, basket weaving and a language presentation. The event will also include performances by the Cherokee Adult Choir.

“I am honored to co-host this event,” said Vazquez, of Welch. “I am always proud to show newcomers the museum and the permanent exhibit of my mother, Anna Mitchell, and her pottery. Each year we see larger numbers of attendees, and I hope it holds true for this Saturday.”

The opening ceremony will present special recognition to the late Cherokee National Treasure Anna Belle Sixkiller Mitchell by honoring her revival of Cherokee and Southeastern pottery. Jeanne Taylor, a close friend of Mitchell, will be honoring her with a poem.

“This is a great honor for Vinita,” said Eastern Trails Museum Director Kathleen Duchamp. “We are so pleased that Chuck Hoskin Jr. is there as always, but this will be the first time he has participated as Chief of the Cherokee Nation.”
The museum is located at 214 W. Illinois Ave. in Vinita. For more information about the Eastern Trails Museum, visit www.easterntrailsmuseum.com.
