Joel Sartore will take intimate portraits of several different species for his lauded Photo Ark initiative
08/13/2019 – National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore will visit the Oklahoma Aquarium tomorrow, Wednesday, August 14, to photograph animals for his world-renowned documentary project, Photo Ark. Sartore founded Photo Ark in 2005 in an effort to document every species living in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries. The multiyear project also inspires positive action through education and helps save wildlife by supporting conservation efforts.
“The goal is to show the world what biodiversity actually looks like and get everyone to care about saving species while there’s still time,” says Sartore.
There are about 12,000 animal species in human care around the world and Sartore says he won’t stop until he photographs all of them. Once completed, Photo Ark will serve as an important record of each animal’s existence, and a powerful testament to the importance of saving them.
Sartore has photographed for Photo Ark in 40 countries; this is his first time to shoot for Photo Ark in Oklahoma.
